A Nightmare No Cat Should Ever Face
For Garfield, there are few things worse than Mondays. Vegetables might actually top the list.
The story begins after Jon serves up a spinach lasagna based on a recipe from the mysterious Chef Monday. The meal sends Garfield into a strange nightmare where vegetables, sugar-free sweets and other culinary horrors run wild.
To escape and restore his precious taste buds, Garfield must journey through a series of surreal dream worlds packed with enemies, collectibles and enough lasagna to keep even him motivated.
Along the way he’ll be joined by familiar faces including Jon, Odie, Arlene and Pookie, while rivals such as Nermal and Squeak are never too far away.
More Than Just A Lazy Cat
While Garfield’s trademark sarcasm and humour remain intact, Escape From Monday introduces a surprising amount of platforming variety.
Players will be able to jump, wall-climb and roll through levels while making use of three special costumes that each unlock unique abilities. The turkey outfit allows Garfield to take to the skies, the surfer outfit helps him glide across water sections, while the cowboy costume introduces a lasso mechanic for traversal and puzzle-solving.
Across more than 40 levels spread throughout three distinct worlds, players will need to master each ability to uncover secrets and overcome obstacles.
Collectibles play a major role throughout the adventure. As players explore, they’ll gather lasagnas and other rewards that can be used to customise and refurbish Jon’s house with a variety of unusual decorations and upgrades.
Garfield Continues His Gaming Comeback
The famous orange cat has enjoyed something of a gaming resurgence in recent years.
Garfield Lasagna Party brought multiplayer chaos to consoles, while Garfield Kart 2: All You Can Drift recently put the lasagna-loving feline back behind the wheel for another kart-racing adventure.
Not every Garfield release has hit the mark. In our review of Garfield Lasagna Party, we noted that the game struggled to stand out among stronger party-game competitors. However, Garfield – Escape From Monday appears to be taking a different approach entirely, focusing on a dedicated single-player platforming adventure with a bigger emphasis on exploration and character-driven humour.
A Fresh Adventure For Garfield Fans
OSome Studio has already demonstrated its experience with licensed family games, and Garfield – Escape From Monday looks to combine that expertise with one of the world’s most recognisable comic characters.
With over 40 levels, multiple costumes, familiar characters and a delightfully ridiculous premise built around a nightmare induced by spinach lasagna, this could be Garfield’s most ambitious gaming adventure in years.
