The next-generation of consoles isn’t far away, but for most of us it might as well be because of rising prices. According to a typically reliable source, the current version of the PS6 is allegedly nearing $1000 in hardware costs.
That’s from Kepler_L2 who has an impressive track record when it comes to insider reporting on all things silicon.
Earlier this year, Kepler_L2 said that his estimate BOM (Bill of materials, meaning the raw component cost) for the PS6 was around $760. He estimated that maybe Sony could sell the machine for $699, if they were willing to subsidize each console sold as normal.
However, Kepler_lL2 has updated those specs, saying that prices have risen by another $200 or so, bringing the new total very close to $1000. So even if Sony opts to take a financial hit with every PS6 sold, we’re probably still looking at $900+.
It puts Sony in a bind. It was widely expected that the PS6 would launch in 2027, but the rumours are now suggesting Sony are thinking of pushing it back. However, prices also aren’t expected to drop, and in fact are even predicted to continue rising. Xbox thinks there will be doubling of the price by 2027, and Lenovo claims they aren’t expecting any price drops until 2030.
If that’s the case, is there any reason to keep waiting?
