Something Isn’t Quite Right

Psalm 5:9-13 isn’t interested in throwing everything at you immediately. Instead, it starts with an environment that seems relatively normal before gradually exposing the unsettling nature hiding beneath the surface.

Your task is to explore the location, search for anomalies and keep moving as the atmosphere becomes increasingly oppressive. It’s a simple premise, but one that allows the game to focus on the small details that can make a familiar space feel distinctly unfamiliar.

And when you’re walking through somewhere that should feel safe, noticing that something has changed can be considerably more frightening than seeing a monster waiting around the corner.

A Compact Psychological Nightmare

The game’s VHS effect plays an important part in its presentation, giving everything a slightly distorted, uneasy appearance. Realistic visuals are paired with high-quality sound to create an experience designed around atmosphere rather than extended combat or complex systems.

There is no sprawling campaign to work through here either. Psalm 5:9-13 is designed to be completed in around 30 minutes, making it a short horror experience that puts its focus firmly on tension.

That also means there isn’t much room for the atmosphere to lose its grip. The game wants to get you in, make you uncomfortable and leave you wondering exactly what you witnessed.

An Uncomfortable 30 Minutes?

Psalm 5:9-13 could appeal to horror fans who enjoy short, atmospheric experiences where exploration and observation are more important than simply fighting whatever happens to be lurking nearby.

At £8.39 on Xbox Series X|S from the Xbox Store, as well as being present on PlayStation, this is very much a bite-sized horror experience. But sometimes half an hour of wondering whether that object was always there is more than enough.

So, keep moving, watch for anomalies and perhaps don’t get too comfortable. Psalm 5:9-13 may be short, but it intends to make those 30 minutes count.
