Wilds open beta is off to a monstrous start – WGB

The latest entry in Capcom’s massively successful monster hunting series (which has now surpassed 100 million units sold across all games) has just entered into open beta and the numbers are impressive.

While we can’t be sure of how many people have taken up arms on PlayStation and Xbox, the Steam release us how gauge just how excited people are to play.

According to SteamDB, which tracks all sorts of useful Steam related data, in the 24 hours since the open beta became available, Monster Hunter: Wilds hit a whopping 463,798 peak concurrent players. As I write this just over 420,000 people are playing, and I think it’s highly likely the peak count will rise over the next day or two.

Comparatively, the most successful game in the entire series, Monster Hunter: Worlds – which has sold over 25 million copies – hit a peak concurrent player count of 334,684 just over 6 years ago.

Monster Hunter: Rise, which has sold over 15 million copies, managed 231,360 when it launched a few years ago.

Then there’s the newly released Dragon Age: The Veilguard from EA. It has gotten some harsh reviews as well as some very high praise, but either way you’d expect a brand new EA title to do well, especially with the Dragon Age name. It has achieved a peak player count of just over 70,000 on Steam.

Of course, do keep in mind the open beta is free to play which certainly helps draw people in whereas the stats I posted for the last two Monster Hunter games and for Dragon Age were based on people actually buying the games.

Still, the beta numbers are very impressive and surely indicate that Monster Hunter: Wilds is going to sell like crazy. After all, 463,798 makes it the 4th most played game on Steam in the last 24 hours. If we look at SteamDB’s list of highest peak concurrent players of all time, the beta sits at 22nd, ahead of Helldiver’s 2.

Hopefully, Capcom will share some information on how many PlayStation and Xbox players have joined the fun, too.
