‘Chance’s Lucky Escape’ Solves Progressively Stranger Problems

Chance’s Lucky Escape is an adventure game about the luckiest dog in the world having some decidedly unlucky things happen to them.

Ever play a narrative game that is so unpredictable, it’s like watching pure chaos but you can control small aspects of it? In this game you are playing as Chance, a dog who just happens to get himself in impossible situations (that can sometimes be talked out of) until it all comes crashing back down.

This is a black and white game, made for the Playdate that draws inspiration from the ridiculousness of 80s cartoons – and that rings true for the almost-random, chaotic nature of the things that happen to Chance as he tries to get to Snowball, an evil genius. While fixing a tyre on your car, which was flat when you needed to use your car, you end up falling down a hole and ending up in an even more complex situation where you have to act like you’re someone you’re not. As you talk your way out of the situation and try to get people to believe you, the person you are pretending to be shows up. It’s a lot of moments like that where something happens, something resolves, and then something even worse happens.

Chance’s Lucky Escape is on the shorter side which can be played through in one sitting, if you’d like. I got to play a demo of the game at AdventureX to see what it was all about. It’s one of those games where you either gel with what they are trying to do or you don’t. If chaos, silly moments, and completely random things is a part of the adventure games you like to play, you will likely find this game to be a lot of fun. The music is also fantastic – which isn’t something I normally get into at events. It’s very jazzy and fits well with the style of the game.
