thatgamecompany has launched a special event in Sky: Children of the Light called Dear Van Gogh. It’s an interactive experience inside Sky. You’ll get to step into a huge, playable 3D version of Vincent van Gogh’s most iconic works. They are all recreated with bold brushstrokes and bright colours that instantly make his paintings recognisable.
But it’s also going way beyond just his famous paintings
The Dear Van Gogh event lets you explore environments in Sky: Children of the Light, inspired by some of his best-known paintings. You’ll see sunny fields in the Netherlands and glowing night skies that only he could imagine.
Now, most people know the story of the lonely genius who struggled through tragedy, but Dear Van Gogh focuses on something different. It looks at the people who believed in him when almost nobody else did. It’s especially the family whose support kept him going through his hardest years. And whose dedication made sure his work wasn’t forgotten after he died.
The idea is that Vincent may never have become the artist the world knows today without the people who loved and believed in him. Since Sky has always been about community and helping each other, the devs are telling Vincent’s story through the people who endlessly supported him.
And hence, you’ll travel through Van Gogh’s paintings while following different parts of his life, from his early uncertainty to his time in Paris and then his final years. Art, emotion, and human connection are all connected together as you work to bring his masterpieces into the light.
A huge part of the event includes the letters exchanged between Vincent and his brother Theo. Their decades-long correspondence is filled with doubt, wonder, and unwavering support. You get to see Vincent’s lifelong struggles alongside Theo’s constant belief in him.
You’re also guided by Theo’s wife, Johanna, who gives players another perspective on Van Gogh’s life. Through her, you’ll learn how the birth of her son inspired Vincent to begin a new period of painting. The story also highlights Johanna’s tireless efforts to promote his artwork after his tragic death at just 37 years old.
The Dear Van Gogh event is available now in Sky: Children of the Light, so grab the game from the Google Play Store.
