October is packed with amazing games – here’s all of them! – WGB, Home of AWESOME Reviews

Even with all the massive releases that have come out this year have you found yourself wishing there were more games to play? Well, October has got you covered! This month is stacked with massive titles covering a heap of different genres. No matter what you enjoy there’s bound to be something worth picking up.

I’ve picked out 9 of the games releasing this month that I personally think are special, but for the full list of releases just scroll down to the bottom of the page. As always, however, game release dates are subject to change, so if I don’t catch an updated release date, that’s my bad!

Assassin’s Creed: Mirage – October 5th

Xbox One, Xbox Series S/X, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, PC

October kicks off with the return of Assassin’s Creed. This newest entry is a prequel to Assassin’s Creed: Valhalla, taking place a few decades beforehand. Mirage will follow Basim Ibn Ishaq, charting his journey from a street thief to an assassin. While the Assassin’s Creed franchise has become bigger and bigger over the years, often having hundreds of hours of content, Mirage is being pitched as a smaller game that aims to return to the stealth action of the early games which makes it sound much more appealing to me.

Forza Motorsport – October 10th

Xbox Series S/X, PC

The mainline Forza game is making its grand comeback. Since the last Forza Motorsport game in 2017, the Forza Horizon series has been getting bigger and bigger. Now, though, the real Forza is back and looking to reclaim its crown as the number 1 racing game on Xbox. It’s got a stacked list of tracks and cars, too.

Total War: Pharaoh – October 11th

PC

Creative Assembly are going through a rough time at the moment due to Sega cancelling their new co-op heist game Hyenas, which is also set to result in a lot of people losing their jobs. But there is a silver lining in the form of Total War: Pharaoh, the new entry in the legendary strategy series. While this appears to be one of the smaller Total War games, the focus on battles that can be effected by weather and fires should keep it feeling fun and fresh.

Hellboy: Web of Wyrd – October 18th

PC, Xbox Series S/X, Xbox One, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, PC,

While Spider-Man might be laying claim to all the headlines this month, it isn’t the only comic-inspired game coming out. Hellboy: Web of Wyrd is a roguelike action game based on the titular hero. Developer Upstream Arcade has worked closely with Hellboy creator Mike Mignola and Dark Horse Comics to create a gorgeous art style that closely resembles the comics. If Web of Wyrd can nail the combat, this could be something special.

Hot Wheels Unleashed 2 – October 19th

PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series S/X, Switch, PC

If the realistic racing action of Forza Motorsport doesn’t get your motor going then perhaps the arcade antics of Hot Wheels Unleashed 2 might. The first game was an excellent arcade racer that featured satisfying handling and beautifully recreated Hot Wheels machines. The sequel is adding in some new tricks like lateral dashes and a jump which can be used to overtake or find shortcuts. While the trailers make Unleashed 2 perhaps seems a little safe in terms of what its doing, it should still be a good time.

Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 – October 20th

PlayStation 5

While many might argue for a certain Bethesda space game, I think Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 will likely be the number one contender for the biggest release of the year. Swinging onto consoles with both Peter Parker and Miles Morales going up against the likes of Kraven the Hunter and Venom, Spider-Man 2 is undoubtedly going to sell like crazy. The first game and its spinoff have sold 33 million copies between them, but there is something holding Spider-Man 2 back: it’s a PlayStation 5 exclusive. While that obviously means we’re going to get to see Insomniac flexing like they did with Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart, it does mean a smaller customer base. With that said, expect to see a boost in PlayStation 5’s being sold as people grab a console to play as the Web-Slinger.

Super Mario Bros. Wonder – October 20th

Switch

If swinging through New York as everyone’s favourite Wall-crawler doesn’t appeal to you, then maybe playing as a Mario-Elephant will. Yup, it’s a brand new 2D Super Mario Bros. game and one of those launching is always a big deal. In fact, this is the first new 2D Super Mario Bros. game since the Wii U. This one features weird reality-altering power-ups and the early previews have been universally positive.

Ghostrunner 2 – October 26th

PC, Xbox Series S/X, PlayStation 5

2020’s Ghostrunner proved to be a real surprise, combining a cyberpunk aesthetic with kickass parkour and precise gameplay where even the smallest mistake could get you killed. Ghostrunner 2 looks like a pretty solid sequel that ramps up the action, adds crazy motorbike sections and has destructible environments.

Alan Wake 2 – October 27th

PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series S/X

The month of ghosts and ghouls closes out with a creepy horror game 13 years in the making. It’s actually hard to believe that Remedy are finally getting to release the sequel to cult hit Alan Wake, and yet here we are, and what better game to round out October? The sequel promises two playable protagonists and all of Remedy’s incredible storytelling ability all wrapped up in a game that seems to be dripping atmosphere from every pore. All of the previews indicate this is going to be something special.
